It can be really hard to get help from somebody that gets all A’s - they usually don’t know what it’s like to struggle with learning.

A good place to go to find out your options is the library - they may know schools to work on basic skills, college options and good websites for practice. www.aaamath.com is a neat starting point - I can find lots of things by putting in “lesson” into Google after whatever it is I”m looking for (or if that’s still too many hits, “lesson plan”)

Keep learning, whatever you do!

Many community colleges have upgrading classes designed especially for people like you. Go to your local community college and ask at the guidance office what they can do for you.

Hi my name is Lea and I am 29. I go to mt. sierra college here in Ca. I am really good at writing and reading, but math is such a problem for me. The college I go to is an art college and its one of those colleges that you graduate in three years. Well, it goes really fast and sometimes I have a hard time remembering everything the professor said or did. My math class last quarter was technical math. Which is algebra and some basic. I have never taken pre algebra before only basic math in high school. Oh man, I felt so stupid. There was three other people in my class and they were so smart. I had to have my boyfriend do my homework for me because I didnt get it. I tried my best to understand, but I dont know it just wasnt sticking to me. What makes it worse is when we took our test I totally failed them because I just cant remember how to do a problem. My boyfriend is sooooo smart, it is sickening.

Welp, I would recommend strongly that you try to learn it instead of having your boyfriend learn it. He already knows it.

HOnestly, you really probably can learn it… tho’ maybe not the first time. I work with people most of my day who are struggling to get through college math that they have to take. Often, once they figure out that they really don’t want to let math keep them from their goals, they fiercely tackle getting it at least well enough to pass the tests.
Can you find some tutoring help to help **you** understand the math? Not somebody so smart they know it already… somebody who understands how hard it is to learn? Is there a peer tutoring center at the school? Ask your advisor (or your math teacher… or anybody who might know) what the otehr students who struggle with math do. (It is extremely, extremely common… you are not alone.)

You need to just take math if you can so you can just focus on that one subject and talk to your teacher they might be willing to help

Don’t feel embarass, they are your family members. Stop caring about what your family members think about you and focus on what you need to do to further your education. He can’t help you, if you don’t help yourself first. If you want him to help you with math, then you have to tell him where you need help. You are not dumb! The more time you spend on thinking that you are dumb, the more time wasted.

I wish folks here would stop using the “s” word — stupid. You are not stupid, having an LD does not make you stupid, it makes learning more of a challenge and something that has to be done differently.
