reading question

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi all,
I posted a question on the reading board about my son’s WJ eval. but no traffic on the question. The short version is that although he tested in the 90’s for the reading part, the summary noted that he was fairly accurate at sight reading but was using poor decoding skills. At nearly 14 and going into the 9th grade, would any of you suggest intervention on my part and if so, what kind of program? I don’t know if he is too old for reading reflex. His poor reading skills and adhd were what qualified him for sp.ed back in 4th grade, his lang. arts grades in middle school have been very good. Just wondering what you all think?

I have heard great things about the Wilson Reading program. My friend’s son was also a poor decoder and grew with this program.

Parent rave about the Lindamood Bell system. You have to go to one of their centers. It is expensive but worth every penny according to the mothers that have sent their kids.

I highly recommend that you get someone to tutor your son in reading using Phono-Graphix. If you want help, email me directly or look at the archives in the reading bulletin board and read what I have and others have written. There is also a good thread going on at that board concerning the results of PG.

He is not too old for Reading Reflex (PhonoGraphix)! It is the quickest and simplest way to teach him the code. You can find referrals for a certified PG tutor at their web site www.readamerica.net. If you don’t find anyone in your area, call them and they will search their entire database for you (some tutors don’t advertise on their web site).

I use Phono-GRaphix for my high school students. If a person was 95, Reading Reflex would teach them how to read. This method of teaching anyone to read is fast and inexpensive. If you want more information about it look in our archives or email me directly.
