Bruno Bettelheim

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

The psychodynamic approach is to repair the internal conflicts that cause aggression. One program was developed by Bruno Bettelheim. Has anyone heard of Bettelheim, and if so what is your opinion of his methods.

Most people with educational backgrounds in psychology have heard of Bruno Bettelheim. You should be able to find a lot of good information about him in an academic database through your school library - and, i dare say, Google. They won’t do your homework for you, though.

Bruno Bettelheim made his name for a theory that autism was caused by “refrigerator” mothers. He is clearly in the Freudian (fraudian) school of thought.

Near the end of his life he was accused widely of abusing children - physcially, I believe. He never faced his accusers, he killed himself. Some say it was because he missed his wife who had died of cancer. There, I gave both sides.

If you are considering the use of psycho-dynamic methods to treat LD - God help the children. Children who need help learning to read, need instructional tools - not excuses and the wonderful tolerance that comes from a belief that whatever a human being does is probably ok - an expression of some lost childhood, blah blah

I guess you can say I’ve pretty well had it with the over one hundred years of hocum coming from the field as it concerns our children. If I were to read anyone with a psycho-dynamic or psycho-educational lean it would be Fritz Redl, famous for the life-space interview. K. Campbell
