Phonemic Awareness programs

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone recommend any reliable and research-based phonemic awareness programs for a 5th grader/9-10 year old? I am currently doing Wilson with a student, and there is a possibility that we may need something else to supplement it. All the recommended phonemic awareness programs that I have seen are geared towards pre-K - Gr. 2. Would using one of those be ineffective in someone older?

Thanks!

I have used the Sound Reading CD with older students. You need to get the teen version — contains all of the material of the elementary version, but cuts out a lot of the cutesy graphics. Most students do not mind using it (about 20 minutes a day is enough if done every day), and it is a great supplement for anyone not yet reading on a mid-3rd grade level. It is a mastery-based program. Average time to complete is 14 hours, although some students could take considerably longer than that.

The website is http://www.soundreading.com . I recommend calling the company to make sure you order the correct CD ($54 + shipping). I think they renamed the teen CD “Reading Improvement and Intervention Software”. You do *not* need any of their other products. The CD by itself is sufficient.

This is by far the best CD I have found for working on PA.

I also use that CD Sound Reading Solutions and think it is very nice. Kids like it. Great for supplemental.

If you are looking for a daily program you could try ABeCeDarian from www.abcdrp.com. This is very similar to Phono-graphix but much nicer. It is kid friendly, not babyish, cheap, and easy to use. There is a yahoo group that is very helpful as well. It cuts to the chase of decoding and the phonemic awareness is built into the program along with fluency. I have had great luck with this program.

I use it with the I See Sam books.

Another program for younger kids is the www.headsprout.com program. I’d use this with younger kids though. They love this computer program. We had a pilot school here use it and kids made huge jumps. The kids also begged to play the game at recess and wanted to stay in. I want to pilot it at my school. There is a money back guarentee too.

One great phonemic awareness program we are using with our 10 year old is Johnny Can Spell. The stuff is quite comprehensive, so be prepared for that, but it is really effective if you have the time. They explain how the program can be used for intermediate grades. That is how we use it.http://www.nine-enterprises.com/nine/gra05.asp Good luck!
