My three-year-old daughter hums whenever she is concentrating on things like coloring,looking at books, and such.She seems to enjoy this or is unable to stop herself,or both I think. She gets irritated and knows what you are doing when you try to distract her .
I am worried about when she starts preschool next month. It is very noticable and calls attention of people who hear her. Her older brother(who would “flap”his hands when he was excited,and still does sometimes) has imitated her.
She is very bright and talked very well at one-year-old.
I have researched the internet, but couldn’t find anything. If anyone has any ideas, similar experiences, or comments, I would love to hear them.
Re: humming while concentrating
I teach in a classroom serving children with learning disabilities. There are different modalities or avenues through which people prefer to learn. One of these is auditory. Auditory learners often learn better when there is soft music or, for some, just white noise (like static) playing in the background. Without the music or some background sound, the learner may hum, sing, tap their pencil or create any other rhythmic noise. When your child gets to pre-school, I’d bet there are others doing the same thing. Also, in a classroom,the presence of other children and the teacher may serve to remind your child of keeping her humming to a voice that only reaches her own ears.
my son hums a lot too but he is autistic. Could she have some minor sensory issues where she has to hum in order to block out some noise because she is hypersensitive to noise?
