I need help from professionals!!! PLEASE!!

My 10.7yo daughter (5th grade)–—I pulled her out of the private school and put her back in public—about 2 weeks ago. I felt that even with the small school size(12 kids) and individual attention—it wasn’t working. She went there all of last year.
I got her speech/language tested—privately with my son’s SLP. She did the CELF 4. Her highest standard score was 84 in language content. 83-expressive language. 78-language memory. 75-core language. 63-working memory. 61 in receptive language. Of course she will be getting private SLP. And I gave the results to the school—which has done NOTHING yet!!

I also requested for her to get all academic testing done again—last time was 3rd grade. The reading specialist FINALLY got her Dible and IRI testing done so they can place her in a reading group. I really haven’t a clue on these scores and what they mean…..
Dibles—her reading fluency was 61. And I guess for 5th grade it should be 104+. So what would a 61 mean? What grade level? Or did she test her at difficult grade levels to see where her fluency would be at?

IRI—all she told me was that she got 19 out of 173 mistakes—5th grade reading, with zero comprehension.
4th grade—12 out of 145—zero comp. 3rd grade—9 out of 146—all comprehension right. 2nd grade—5 out of “something”(I don’t know how many)–and had only half comp.
So what on earth does that test mean??? What is her reading level?
They did call me yesterday and tell me that they did there MAP testing(some computer testing thing) and got her scores back. She didn’t tell me the scores—but between the reading tests and MAP test–she is moved to resource room. YEH!!

Can anyone tell me what’s going on with my daughter?? Is the langauge delay—really a language disorder? Or is something else going on? And why on earth has she not reading better since about 2nd grade???? We all thought she was. Another thing–—at the private school–-they tested her at the beginning for there reading levels. She was the exact same as the year before in the beginning. At the end of the year–she was in the 3rd grade reading level. She lost all skills over the summer! What does that mean?

Is the language stuff and reading ability have anything to do with each other?

In 3rd grade—my son’s neuropysch tested her and she dx her with dyslexia and dysgraphia.

Just this last August she was dx with depression, anxiety, and some other minor dx.

Any thoughts on my daughter??

Hey Holly,
I’m not an educational professional but I’m a Mom with 2 kids w/ several LDs—I know a little.

You said that the neuropsych dx’d dyslexia and dysgraphia. Did you daughter have any specific intervention for this like LiPS, Wilson, etc., for her reading? If she didn’t, it would be hard for her to learn under ‘regular’ reading instruction.
Did she have any exercises or a program put together for her for the dysgraphia by an occupational therapist? Did the neuropsych suggest a specific set of interventions for her case?

If she was given tests by the public school or anyone else, it is your right to question any test, the result, or any intervention the school’s going wants to give. I’d ask for a meeting and have them spell out exactly what each test is used for and what the scoring means for your daughter.

When you put your daughter in public school, did she enter with an IEP, having previously been classified as an LD child in the public school system? Frankly, I think you are lucky they have performed a few tests and put her in resource so quickly. Because they have, I suspect she already was classified as a special education student. Usually, you have to write a formal request asking for testing, the student has to be observed by an academic intervention committee, then the committee decides whether or not your child needs testing (though it appears some states will test at a parent’s request, alone). If she is a returning special education student, the school will follow the old IEP, until re-evaluation is done. Normally, it takes a month or two, with two being far more common, for all testing to be completed. Once it is, you will be called to the school for a meeting to discuss the testing and what the results indicate.

As far as what is going on with your daughter, she has been labeled with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Both of these are languge-based learning disabilities that require serious remediation. Like the previous poster, I wonder if your daughter has received Orton-Gillingham based tutoring, such as the Wilson reading program? Do you know what they used in the private school?
