teaching reading - Aspergers

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,

I just received a student who has been diagnosed as having Asperger’s Syndrome. I use the Wilson Reading Program with my students. I’m afraid that this reading program is not the best approach for a student with Asperger’s. Would a highly visual approach work better for this type of student? If so any recommendations??

Thanks for any and all help!!

I have worked with a child with this disability, and I found that a visual approach worked well…then again, ALL students are different. Lots of kids with forms of autism learn better visually. When I worked with this particular student, I did pictures with reading/spelling words, and took them away as they became more familiar. Maybe this will help some???
