Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

HI. I just had another meeting at my daughters school and she is still struggleing in all her subjects except history (she gets A’s and B’s ).Her worst subject by far is math. She does not get it at all.I read the article about dyscalculia and it totaly discribes her. Her teachers all agree that she has a learning disablity in math and that this is also effecting her other subjects. She is an exceptional reader but does poorly in Reading and English. She is also having trouble in Science. She seems to be able to get a concept down but is unable to retain any information. She forgets things .The school is going to bring in a psycologist to talk to her to see what kind of help can be offered. I would like any advice I could get.My daughter is in 6th grade. Are there any programs for the computer or games that can help do you does Sillvan learning center help with these types of problems.I want to help her in any way and she wants the help. Thanks Jess

Hi Jessie11,
You might like to visit my Dyscalculia Forum, for more information. It is important to define which of the Sub-Types are relevant. So that you take the right approach.
Yet typically Dyscalculics are good at english, but you say that she has difficulties with english as well.

My dd has Dyscalculia but also has other LDs which made creating support for her a more difficult process. I think its important to find out what her areas of strength and weakness are, which would require extensive testing, so that you can build on her strengths and use them to support her weaker areas. She may have Executive Function deficits which would effect her ability to retain and retrieve information. There are many different things that can be done to help these difficulties once you figure out what her needs are.

Have you considered the possibility of a non-verbal learning disability? This is about the age where it begins to show up, and the difficulties with math and English fit. Websites with more information are http://www.nldontheweb.org and http://www.nldline.com.

This situation needs to be put into some logical perspective.

We need to ask ourselves. Is there any practical solution for this child’s problem?

Will Arithmetic ever not never not be a huge impediment for her?

Do the current lables even fit her?

What impact does her constant failure have on here psychologically? The old saying “It’s not how many time you get thrown off the horse that matters it’s how mant times you get back on” should not apply to something as fragile as a child’s concept of her self worth.

IMO, self esteem is more important than success in the ill conceived math programs thrown at kids who have not met the developmental milestones by our educational system.

The sad thing is that the challenge becomes that of the parent and the child and the school is able to wash their hands of the problem while the student and the parent struggle.

IMO Schools need to play a role in protecting the emotional well being of special needs students instead of treating them like they are a burden.

Math is overrated.

Hi, my son had trouble with math from the beginning of school, he is in grade 7 now in regular class, all these years he had a tutor and now he is getting better in math and he gets mostly B’s. He also was in school for kids with learning disabilities for 2 years (grades 5 and 6), did PACE in grade 5 and used Brainbuilder software every day, it improved his short term memory a lot. Brainbuilder is pretty cheap -around $40, so if you want to give it a try here is the link: http://www.smartkidssoftware.com/ndabt1b.htm

PACE is expensive but there is a home verson of PACE - it’s called Brainskills, it should help as well.

Hope it helps. G.
