Hi, my son was diagnosed last yr officially with
ADD/ADHD. Have had him on 15mg ritalin three
times a day since and while he was in grade school
last yr it seemed to help tremedously. Now, he is
in junior high,(6th grade)and all sorts of problems
seems to be arising. He is not getting work done
at a steady pace, not paying attention, mouthing
off(at home & at school to teachers, aides & anyone
else). At home, he seems to play me against my
boyfriend, we argue constantly about how to correct
or discipline my son for forgotten chores, how he
acts, what he says, what he does to the point that
I have started to question my trust in the boyfriend.
I have started to think that he just hates my son. We
have done counselling, and been told that he needs to
be disciplined differently than my daughter who does
not have a disability, but, he doesn’t seem to understand. Does anyone have anything that can help
me???? Thanks, Carol
Re: ADD/ADHD for my 12 yr old son
Iam new on this web, But scifinut is telling right. My son is 12 also. He was on 36mg of concerta and depekote for mood swings. He went to live with his dad and they took him off concerta. When school started he went crazy on them.He became violent, he was refusing to do work, and failing. The day I went to get him he was locked in a room, biting hisself, messed in his pants, throwing chairs and beating his head on the wall.I took him straight to a behavioral center and they started his meds back and keep him for 6 days. That was 3 months ago. He is passing all classes with As and Bs. He has also made cheerleader. The doc said his meds needed to change with puberty anyway. He now takes straterra60 mg ,depokote 500mg night, trazadone, and depokote 250 mg. I have been through manymeds in the last 4 years. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it but if it is hell you got to do something differant.
A couple things come to mind. First, it might be time to re-evaluate your son’s meds. As kids grow, things change and he may need a different med.
Also, mouthing off is is pretty common for that age. Firm discipline should help. If it doesn’t, he may need more help from a psychiatrist or psychologist.
If your bf isn’t willing to work with you and a therapist to help your son, he might not be the right person for you. ((Hugs))
