Private Testing Options

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

We are living overseas and will be home for the summer. My 11 year old daughter was diagnosed with dyscalculia by her teachers. I would like to have her formally tested in California this summer. Does anyone have recommendations on testing facilities on the west coast?

Hi LP,
I run a Dyscalculia Forum that you might like to visit?
Though the first thing is to define the purpose of the Test?
Where no doubt you want to know for yourself.
But the other reason, is probably to show to the teacher/s and school? So as to possibly get some support and accommodations made?
Though it is best to talk to the school first, and find out if their are any certain details that need to be stated in the Test Report?
As quite often they require some trivial detail, that doesn’t really make any difference.
Except that they can use it as an ‘Escape Clause’?
Where they reply with: ‘Your Report doesn’t state; ‘X’, so we are not allowed to recognise your report.
This might not be the situation with your school, but it safest to simply ask them if any specific details must be noted?
Also as your daughter is 11, high school is probably not long away? Where it could be worth while to check with them as well, about any particular report requirements? So that you dont get sent back to get another test?
Though another side to it, is that most teachers dont know anything about maths difficulties and Dyscalculia? So you’ll need to become a bit of an expert, so that you can teach the teachers about it.

As to the actual test, you need to find an Educational Psychologist. If you do a google for the Californian Learning Disabilities Association, they will probably have a list of them.
Though you need to ask them if they can diagnose Dyscalculia, before making an appointment.
