new member with a few questions

Hi my name is Rania, I am 21 years old and am curently attending a local community college for massage therapy. I am blind and have a learning disability. I have someone taking notes for me in class and I am also recording the classes. I would take my own notes in class but I can’t keep up with trying to write the important things because as the teacher is talking about one thing and goes on to another. I am still trying to catch up with notes from the first thing the teacher was talking about. I also try to add to my notes that my note taker took for me in class but even by trying to take notes from classes I have recorded I also need spelling of words so that takes me even longer. I remember being in class in high school and even tho I had someone reading my notes to me I was still playing catch up. I wanted to no if there are things that some of you have done so you can take notes independently? Thanks for your help Rania,

I also have a problem with processing information. I feel fusterated sometimes when it comes to trying to remember a lot of information at one time. I some times wish i could process information faster then I do. Does anyone have any tips on how I can try to remember things a little faster? I have been looking over my notes over and over again. I have also had a friend quiz me on what i am learning. That works for me but I would like to be ablse to process information faster and not feel like it takes me for ever to process a question and find an answer. Thank you Rania,

Hello Rania:

I am legally blind and have a learning disability. It took me 3 times longer to get through college than my friends. I had to take a smaller course load. Having someone take your notes it’s very good. You might also see if you can record the lectures. You should also see if someone can scan your books onto your computer. I scan books and put them on my computer. Then I transferred these books to a device called the Book Port. Book Port is put out by the American Printing House for the Blind. The Book Port can read your books to you. I read all of my books using the Book Port.

I do record che class lectures but I have a hard time adding to my notes because I don’t have spelling of the words. I didn’t get the book in a print copy because I didn’t think I would need it but now I am starting to see whare it would come in handy. I do my own scanning of any hand outs I get in class. I feel like my learning disability doesn’t alow me to remember things as fast as my classmates. They have the name of the bones and muscles as well as ware they are on the body and I am sitting in class thinking I wish I new this already like everyone else. I am spending every day all day studying just so I can remember everything. I feel better now because I don’t have to feel like I am the only blind person with a learning disability that makes it difficult. My class size is small. I am in a class of five other students.
