Hello everyone.
I am new to the group and I am in need of some advice.
I run a martial arts school in Pensacola Florida and I have been asked by a local group to work with their adults members with a LD.
I am very excited to work with the group and I owe it to them to do some research. What advice or input would you give to me??
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks so much!
Doug Davis
Re: Need HELP! Advice and Input welcome and needed!
Hello Geoff,
Thank you so much for the ideas and feedback.
I did the first class and it went great.
To answer your question, I am doing a non-contact martial art program. We are working on balance, coordination, practical self defense techniques and alot of fun and laughing. :)
Thanks again and you have turned me on to some new topics of research.
Sincerely,
Doug Davis

Hi Doug,
I’m happy for you and your students that the first class went great!
One other thing that I thought that I might mention, is to introduce doing movements with their ‘eyes closed’?
Not when a movement is first introduced, but during later practise. Where closing our eyes and making a movement, really brings us in touch with our body.
Just a thought.
Geoff,
Hi Doug,
It’s really good to see that you’re taking the time to do some research!
Martial Arts are in fact an excellent Therapy for many different types of LD’s.
Often LD people don’t have a good coordination between their left and right body sides.
Also lack what is called a sense of Proprioception, which is awareness of where their body parts are, in space.
As well as Spatial Thinking difficulties.
Sequential thinking can also be a problem.
The marvel of Martial Arts, is that it can help develop all of these!
Better still, instead of having to go to ‘Therapy’ to develop these. With Martial Arts they can be developed in an enjoyable activity, where they are acquiring a skill.
One thing that they often need, is to have plenty of ‘space’ around them, as they can be a bit clumsy.
Do you teach a ‘non-contact’ form, which is generally preferable.
I’m sure that they’ll really benefit from learning Martial Arts!
Geoff,
