I would like to find out what other special education teachers know about using Reading Master or Horizons from SRA with lower elementary students with a reading disability. Any thoughts or concerns with either of these?
Re: Reading Curriculums
I use Reading Mastery in my Resource Room and all of the inclusion teachers in my building use for thier students. It is used for the full 30 minutes daily with the at risk and coded studed students in grades 1-3. It has been exceptionally well received and has certainly improved the reading of the students.
At he upper levels (4-6), our district uses Corrective Reading, which is also published by SRA. The teachers have been very pleased with the results. Most importantly, students and parents are noticing the difference.
Our school has been using SRA Reading Mastery and Decoding Program also by SRA. Well… We are at a crossroad ourselves. Many of the special ed teachers in our district feel that Reading Mastery is great for students who need the foundation with decoding skills. This is accomplished in RM I and RM II but oonce these skills are mastered, the series lacks what students need to develop higher level thinking skills and motivation. The stories have no redeeming value and students cannot connect to the characters. Our district is looking into other programs for our students who are reading below grade level and need something other than the regular ed series. I have not seen Horizons yet but the sales rep is sending it out for us to review.
