My Daughter has ADD, learning disabilites

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi my name is Shawn. My husband and I have a daughter
who is 9 years old and in 3rd grade. She has been
DX with ADD not by her school but by her peditrician.
I see signs of Dyslexia also but the school is giving
us a hard time about getting her tested. It has been
3 yrs. since her last evaluation from the school and
we are involved in an IEP. We are feeling that the
school is just doing the minimal to help our child-
she is below baseline in Reading and Math- she gets
pulled from class 2x a day but is missing health, social
studies and science class. I know that math is very important but so is my daughter’s self esteem. She
enjoys science,Social studies and HEalth but we were
told that due to her LD’s that she won’t be having any
of those classes until middle school-she would excel
in those classes and I don’t think it is fair for the
school to make this decision for us and not taking
our recommendation into consideration. WE are truly
at wits end with the whole school. I even went to
the head of special education but they took the school
side. I have made complaints about the aides that are
working with my child- nothing has been done about that
they talk down to my daughter, no encouragement at all
which makes my daughter feel worse than she needs to feel. I honestly don’t know what else to do.I want to
go to the head and see some heads roll, but I don’t
know how to get started. Any suggestions please respond
THanks!!! Shawn

I would suggest getting an advocate.

We have had trouble in our county getting proper help and remediation for my children. I have pretty much taken it upon myself to do it ourselves.

It sounds like the school will be very hard to deal with.
