Has anyone done FFW?? Demarti, are you still around?

Hi there,

I haven’t posted in a while. We’ve been working really hard with the private SLP. My dd loves going to see her. She is also seeing a psychotherapist for self esteem and emotionality issues. DD is amazing when with these people and then according to her school teacher, she hardly speaks at school at all. Sad. She is a chatterbox with the private SLP, but not at school. Also, she is a chatterbox when in social settings. We met with the school IEP team in Sept and got them to provide one on one speech therapy at school and had them write on the IEP that parents choose to remove dd from school 2 times/week for private outside therapy. They probably would have been reluctant to do all of that except that the private SLP was at the meeting with me.

In January we’ll start FFW training. I’m hoping to see a difference, mostly in her oral language skills. Every time the private SLP teaches her something new, it seems to open up some doors for her. For example, she could not categorize words before, but now she is able to provide a list of 3-5 items in certain categories.

We’re still working on visualization.

That’s an update on us. Hope all is well with everyone.

We did FFW. I saw noticeable differences in receptive language skills but not spoken language. My child who had never been nosy all of a sudden was listening to everything!!! I would suggest doing The Listening Program first. Many people have said it makes FFW easier to get through.

My 6th grade daughter just finished the literacy portion of Fast Forward. It was okay over the summer. But, time wise it was difficult once school started. School is busy with homework and it’s hard to be motivated and fit in FF. It was good. I can’t say I see a dramatic difference. But, I think everything we have done over the years makes a difference. Starting middle school is a challenge. But, she will finish the first quarter with All Bs and one C. I just had a meeting with ESE staff members. This was not an IEP meeting, but just a meeting to ask more questions about ESE and middle school, high school and college. It just seems like accommodations are the key to success. Making sure good accommodations are in place.

We did FFW Language this summer. I can’t really tell any difference, to be honest. But I think it really depends on the individual child. Some it helps and others it may not.

I would caution you that it is a tiring program and I would normally recommend doing it during the summer.

Thanks,

I think we’re going to go ahead and do it in Jan/Feb. I want to get started. The sooner the better for us, assuming our dd is ready for it. The private SLP will try her out on a demo first.

She wont let us do it if she doesn’t think we can handle it. We’re going to use school hours to do it too, so it wont be above and beyond school and hopefully it will help her in some way.

I forgot to mention that the school district did not want us to take our dd out of school for private therapy any more. They said that we would be charged with truancy because these are unexcused absences. So, now we’re battling over this. At the same time, they claim that underlying foundational skills for language is not something that they remediate.

DeMarti, if you are out there, let me know, because I have some specific questions for you.

Thanks,
Kathryn
