What do I do if I am a "parental pitfall"

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What do I do if I am a “parental pitfall” as described in the homeschooling section of the article “Homeschooling a child w/ADHD Good Idea or Big Mistake”. I get easily frustrated with my 8 yr.old with ADHD and ODD. We are continually at odds with each other. I took her out of public school for the exact reasons given in the above article. I don’t know what to do…continue struggling with her or what? I don’t feel that putting her back in school where she was miserable is an option. Any suggestions?

Are there any programs in your area where you can do both- homeschooling and a school setting? My 7 year-old nephew is involved in a program that his primary source of schooling is at home, but twice weekly he goes to “school” for a few hours. This group also plans and attends field trips once a month. My sister is also involved as an assisstant teacher (in a class other than my nephew’s). This has seemed to work very well for both of them.

I think with any type of schooling it’s important to have routine with day. Part of the problem too, may be that she knows that you are her mother and that you won’t do anything to her. I think structure is vital as well as consistant discipline.
