Measuring Reading Progress

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

In the past (since 2nd grade), we have used the Woodcock Johnson Reading Test at the end of each school year to measure the progress on grade level my 12yo daughter has made since the end of the last year. She is currently in the 6th grade. Her reading teacher wants to use the reading portion of the Wechler* Achievement Test this year. (*not sure if I spelled that right) Is anyone out there familiar with the Wechler? compared to the WCJ? Any info you have is greating appreciated!!Nancy

: They are both good achievement tests. Both have a word identification subtest that requires the student to read words of increasing difficulty in isolation. Both measure comprehension, but the WIAT measures it via having the student read a paragraph and then answering 1-2 questions. The WJ has a word attack subtest which is good to measure progress if the child has phonological processing issues. There is a new version of the WJ that arrived around Oct.-Nov. It is revised and re-normed. Several subtests have been added. I am using it with my students this year. If your child’s teacher has this test, I would say “use it.” If she has the old version, they try the WIAT. Our psych. gives the WIAT as we are required to use more than one measure of achievement when determining a LD.
