Testing my 5 year old for ADHD- what should I expect?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son has just turned 5. At his 4 year checkup I mentioned to our ped some serious concerns that I had and he said he would refer him for testing but not until he turned 5 because so many children grow out of what some call ‘symptoms’ by age 5. Well my son has not. We are going for testing in a few weeks and I have no clue what to expect.

They will probably ask about what symptoms he is showing, have you fill out some checklist forms for ADHD (Connors and BASC are the most typical), and get a family history.

The problem I have with this type of testing is that it is ONLY looking for ADHD and does not give a good picture of what else may be contributing to the symptoms. There are many different things that can look like ADHD but are not.

Good luck with the testing.

My son was tested at age 4, he was very hyper and always leaving a trail of toys or anything he could get his hands on. I had him tested, it included various activities, including puzzles, sensory and other materials. They just test how he focuses on a task and the attention span. When my son was first tested, he was all over the room checking out everything except what he was supposed to be working on.
