trying to put a 'name' to what's happening...

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi there,

My daughter is in 5th grade and was deemed developmentally delayed in Kindergarden (sp?), so we’ve been thru IEP and testing since then. Her testing ‘says’ borderline MR with an IQ of 70.
She is also ADD.

I’m wondering if what she experiences is a learning disability or just something that is part of neurological impairment AND how the answer to this question will help me get her the best help.

She can memorize things all day long, or read a passage… but cannot apply that knowledge or ‘comprehend’ what she’s reading. It’s like the connection between knowledge and understanding is ‘broken’.

IS this a learning disability?

I want to be the best advocate for my child that I can be, and I appreciate any feedback anyone can chime in.

THANKS

-Kari

Do you think that IQ score is accurate? She was quite young when she took it. I am curious what kinds of IQ tests she’s had, especially since she’s having trouble with comprehension. Our daughter tested very low on IQ tests given by the schools until she took a nonverbal IQ test (at a private practice), where she scored average. Now that we have a large discrepancy between her IQ results and her performance on achievement tests, the schools were more willing to do some testing for learning disabilities and get help from the school as well.
