We finally have some progress with the school and getting my dd an IEP based on her scattered scores. She qualifies as having a specific learning disability in reading. To me, it’s dyslexia and I was wanting to share with my dd that she has it as a term in general instead of “she’s have a hard time reading” and I have a few books explaining dyslexia, not specific learning disability in reading books. They keep saying that we would never use that word as it’s a medical term. Can I still say she’s dyslexic or what? lol Just wondering why they won’t use this word as a diagnosis? I’m just glad we’re getting some much deserved help and she has now qualified as having an LD.
Thanks,
Christi
Schools can’t diagnose medical conditions. They aren’t medical doctors. This is probably why they are not using the term. Also, dyslexia is not the only cause of reading disabilities.
You could get a neuropsych eval if you want to have specific terms for your dd’s disability. There are also a lot of good books for children on living with LD that are not specific.
I’m glad they are finally giving her the help she nees. :)
