children grow up

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

One area that does not seem to get much attention is what happens when the child with learnning disabilities becomes an adult. I’m interested in what other families have done as both the parents and child have aged. My daughter is one of those young adults who does not qualify for Voc Rehab, SSI - nothing. She earns minimum wage in a part time job, uses public transportation, takes courses at the community college and lives at home. She is friendly and funny but is just “different enough” that she is not a part of the other twenty-somethings social group. She is becoming increasingly uncomfortable with people her age who do what she doesn’t (drive, have a better paying job/college degree). She desperately wanted to get an apartment a couple of years ago but has become increasingly fearful; obstacles include costs (for us) and lonliness and isolation for her. An ideal situation might be to connect with parents of similar girls and go in together to fund an apartment and offer supervision for bills, etc. I haven’t been able find those families in NC or VA, but I know there must be others who are in our same situation. Any suggestions?

You might find more info on this subject under the Adults with LD and ADHD. It might also give her a way to connect with others like herself.

Check at taht community college disabilities center. At the CC where I work, there is a club… also, if you join organizations like the International Dyslexia Association, their newlsetters have advertisements from places which support adults with LDs.
