Hi, my name is Emma and i am new here. I am just seeking advice. I have a little boy called James, he is the most loving child. When he was 2 and a half years old he started playgroup just so he could be around other children. While at playgroup the teachers thought that James was a little hyperactive which i had already known about, i had already asked for help off my health visitor at this point. Over the next year he began to develop behaviour problems. He is now 4 and has been seen by a psychologist. I learnt alot of new things with this assesment like, he sits on his own in school and doesnt like to interact with other kids but when he does he gets into trouble because he doesnt know how to share. He is also having trouble understanding verbal instructions and finds it difficult to join in group activities. James cant cope when there is too many people around him and thats when he starts playing up. He has now been refered to a pediatrition for a diagnosis but i have been told that this could take 6 to 8 months. I am wondering if anyone knows what i can do in the meantime or how to speed things up because over the last couple of weeks his behaviour has become much worse in the house and in school. I have tried to talk to my friends about this but nobody really understands what i am going through. Any advice would be apreciated. Thank you.

Lots of parents who have been thru’ what you have. They have more info on Child Find which might help you get your child evaluated by the school district.
Sounds like you have your hands full. There are a couple of things that might help. From what you describe some of his issues might be sensory based. A great book on Sensory Integration is The Out Of Sync Child. This book has some great ideas for helping kids who get overwhelmed by too much sensory input or those who need more input. It also has some great stuff that can be done at school.
http://www.exploratorium.edu/exhibits/ladle/index.html this site shows what it may sound like to have an auditory processing disorder. I found it really helpful in understanding my dd’s APD issues.
Are you getting testing outside the school? If you are, you can call and ask to be put on a cancellation list if you are willing to take an earlier appointment quickly.
