It is not often that we share successes on this forum only problems and frustrations. So, I wanted to share a success we had today.
I got a phone call from my first graders teacher today. She asked me if I’m aware how much his reading has improved. She then proceeded to tell me that she tested him on January 20th and his reading was at a level B. When she tested him yesterday he tested at a level F. The other children in his group have only increased one or two levels. She seemed genuinely shocked by his improvement. I’m guessing it’s because she doesn’t often see that much improvement in such a short amount of time.
She knows we go to a tutor because I take him out of school once a week to go.
I have to admit though after literally years of looking we’ve found a really great tutor. It has made all the difference.
Re: Success with Barton System
I think finding a “good fit” with your tutor is such a big key to success. My daughter and her tutor are a great match and we have had great success with OG method of tutoring. I also think the Barton website is one of the best when you have a struggling reader and don’t know what to do next. Keep up the good work!!

I’m so happy to hear that you are seeing success! I just had my 10 year old tested for dyslexia and we are going to do the Barton program at home. There are no OG tutors in my area. I have not bought any levels just yet but plan to start as soon as I get all the results back from the testing specialist!
Re: Success with Barton System
That is beautiful news. Barton worked wonders for our daughter. Glad you found a tutor who has been able to help your child.
I noticed in your post that you stated he gets pulled out of school one time per week to attend tutoring. May I ask how many times per week you are currently tutoring him?
FYI-I just wanted to mention that for any OG tutoring, it is recommended that a student be tutored at a minimum of twice a week for at least 45 minutes per session to continue to see and maintain progress.
Best wishes. Thanks for posting such a positive upbeat thread.
Re: Success with Barton System
He is only being tutored once a week. I know it would be beneficial to have him tutored more but we have two children being tutored weekly so it adds up fast.
I’ve talked with the tutor and she says once a week is enough for him if we do all the homework she gives us. She gives us enough to keep us busy 15-30 minutes a day.
Our older child will be going to tutoring twice a week during the summer with homework everyday to see if he can move along faster.
I wish we could afford to go more, but it is taking all of our extra for tutoring.

It is good that the tutor is giving you additional homework to reinforce the lessons that he is learning.
Here is what Susan Barton says about tutoring using an OG method:

I think the important thing is that your child is reinforcing the skills learned. Many dyslexic children cannot retain what they have learned unless it has received sufficient repetition to take it from short term to long term memory.
Hurray! Its great to hear that he is succeeding and that the tutoring is really making a difference.
