AT Help for College???

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m a dyslexic grad student working on my PhD and I’m wondering if anyone has any advice for me. I just signed up for RFB&D and Bookshare websites but they don’t have all the books I need for the upcoming semester. I have a required textbook that is 700+ pages long and there’s no way that I’m going to make it through it on my own.

I talked to RFB&D and Bookshare and they said they can put it on the list to be recorded but the semester starts in about 6 weeks and they said it will take at least 4 months to get it scanned and proofed.

I have a small scanner but there’s no realistic way for me to scan all those 700+ pages.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Look into the Intel Reader. It might provide another option: http://www.intel.com/healthcare/reader/about.htm

Thanks for the suggestion. At $1500 it’s way out of my league. Plus I’d still have to scan (or take a picture of) each page…

Do you have a friend that would be willing to read the text to you until Bookshare or RFB&D can get it scanned?

You might consider contacting the publisher directly and asking if they would allow you to buy a print enabled or electronic version of the book. If you have already purchased the print copy of the book, you might ask for it to be provided free of charge because you already bought the hard copy.
