Hi, all! My daughter (9) was diagnosed with dyslexia toward the end of the school year. Now that school is out for the summer I want to help her advance her reading skills (or at least not regress). I am looking for any independent feedback on the davis dyslexia program not feedback from someone affiliated with the centers. Also, has anyone had results from Sylvan or other chain tutoring centers? I am really at a loss..

A neuropsychologist referred my then 18 yo dtr to a Davis facillitator for dyslexia. Its now a year later, and my dtr is doing really well in college. I was very skeptical at first because I had led her down so many non-productive paths in the past. After the program, she did daily practice for months, with her boyfriend, at college. The boyfriend was trained by the Davis facillitator to help her. Her handwriting improved immediately after the first week, and that gave her a big boost in confidence that the method might help her. Gradually, her spelling has improved a lot, and her reading comprehension has improved greatly. So, for this one student, it has made all the difference, but it does require cooperation of the student and daily, dedicated practice for months and months, using clay and a dictionary. I just wish all these problems had been addressed at ate 8 instead of 18, but she has a great start now. She has mainatined contact with the Davis facillitator in Chicago, Kim, who would like my daughter to be a daily practice tutor if she ever returns to Chicago. Since the method is so dependent on follow up practice, sometimes it is hard for parents to do this for various reasons.
I had to go into the college savings to pay for the Davis program but it was worth every cent.
We used Davis when my dd was about that age. It is very pricey and while it helped a little, she has other complications that impeded her progress. I really liked the book Gift of Dyslexia by Ron Davis as it really described the 3 dyslexics I live with. :)
We’ve never used a chain tutoring program but I’ve always “homeschooled” over the summer to help both my kids maintain. I’m a big believer that too much time without structure causes too many kids (and teachers) to waste too much time at the beginning of the school year.
