We got a problem… The more ir ead about the education system the more it seems to me that though some relaly do have LDs (learning *DIFFERENCES* as opposed to disabilities) it seems the education system is pretty much failing *all* children in the USA. 1 in every 4 children (as reported today by CNN) is dropping out of highschool today as an average for the entire country. (I am sure it differs atleast a bit as far as the average for each individual state.) This is a statistic *AFTER* No Child Left Behind has been passed. What is most terrifying about it is that since No Child Left Behind has been passed the rate of drop out has…. grown exponentially.
What seems even worse, is that even with the passing of this law and even with the rise in drop outs, nationwide, virtually *NOTHING* is being done by this system in place to educate our children in this country. This is the same system that we support with our tax dollars. 1 out of every 4 sets of parents is paying taxes for local public education and has a child that has quit receiving it in it’s entirity. Yet the system is doing *NOTHING* is taking *NO* steps to provide education to these drop outs or to bring them back into the fold of education in any relevant way. (Again this is according to CNN and was just reported i happened to catch it and the report made me sick to my stomach so i thought i would share it with all of you.)
So now 1 in every 4 sets of parents pays taxes for education their child is not receiving the system is making no effort to provide the education to the kids who no longer want it. How can this be legal??? Why are american parents not storming the white house demanding better from our systems??? It is bad enough that they fail our LD population. But they don’t stop there, Now they fail atleast 1 out of every 4 students nationwide.
This fact speaks to such a major defunction in the systems we have in place that i think we are in need of a major overhaul. Or atleast some serious alterations and rethinking of a great many facets of our system. Perhaps it isn’t the students with LD failing courses, perhaps it is the system and solely the system failing kids with LD? And now, it seems failing all pretty equally across the boards. What can we do about this national black eye? Because this is simply shameful and inexcusable! This situation demands immediate attention from LD parents educators students etc as well as all those things related to so called normal students. Scarier still is the question i have to ask next, if 1 in 4 children nationwide is not in class, where are they and what are they doing and what does that mean for the direction our society is going to take over the course of the next 50 years? Our children LD and normal deserve better from our system of education and if it will not provide better we must come together and create better for ourselves because the systems put in place by our representatives funded by our tax dollars are no longer really serving anyone’s needs and if someone doesn’t do something quick… I fear that the future will grow increasingly bleak for the next generation of americans presently in and out of our education “system” (or defunction.)
Many cultures have sayings about how we borrow this world from our children and how we have a duty to leave it better than we found it. 1 in 4 students are dropping out. We have a duty to educate every child. Because education is the difference between success and failure in this world. We will soon be a third world country filled with starving highschool drop outs (rather than ethiopians) if we don’t take a stand already and demand better. Because we sure do pay for better with our tax dollars. Perhaps the war we should be fighting is NOT the one on terrorism but the one on ignorance. After all, terrorism is bread from ignorance as is every other negative thing in this world. The system is broken. Time to fix it, or time to chuck it and establish a new one. Anyone have any thoughts? I am curious about the feelings of other ppl on this one now that i have shared my own….

Our children seem to be so immature and not ready for the public school. We are pushing small, young children to be grown-ups. We need to give them time to play, explore and grow. It is a shame that we take away their childhoods just so they can try to pass some tests. I’ve taught 33 years and the children are being forced to try to learn material for children one to three years above their age. We need to slow down and allow the children to learn at their pace.
I believe we should highly consider the source. CNN and other news operations are notorious for “blowing things WAY out of proportion.
