My son was diagnosed with cognitive disabilities and we have tried everything to help him. We have spent about 30 thousand already in remedial programs for him, but he just can’t seem to progress. He is 12 years old and he is only reading at a grade 2 level.
He seems to do a little better at Math, Sciences, etc. But as soon as your bring a book out, he hides under the table and gets very upset that he has to read. It is so painful for him. I am thinking about getting him a Lap Top to take to school, to help him with reading and comprehension. His last test with the Physiologist was last week and he is in the 2 percentile for his age. Can anyone suggest some good software programs that can help him learn and understand?
Thanks
Kurzweil 3000 really helped my daughter with reading. http://www.kurzweiledu.com
Another thing you may look at for the reading is Irlen Syndrome - http://www.irlen.com. This can interfere with the ability to read and cause severe anxiety. My daughter hated the sight of a book until we figured this one out.
In 6th grade my daughter couldn’t read above a 3.0 level. She was fairly strong at 2.5. After getting dx’d with Irlen Syndrome and getting appropriate accommodations for it, her reading jumped to a 5th grade level. Adding assistive tech in the form of Kurzweil, her reading jumped even further. By the end of 9th grade she was reading at grade level.
Comprehension is a whole other ball game. This will likely take more work and lots of exposure to the meanings of works. Work on building his vocabulary.
