Treatment for ADHD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

The three articles concerning treatment of ADHD are consistent in their advocacy of finding the correct therapy to help individual children. I have witnesses some students makes miraculous strides after beginning medication, while other students react in an adverse fashion. Each child needs to be carefully diagnosed and begin with the least invasive treatment (dietary and behavior modification). Eventually, students need to develop strategies for coping with impulses, inattentiveness, and organizational skills. Medication may be needed to provide immediate results but other methods need to be incorporated so the child can function independent of medication and rely on his own copying skills and organization strategies.

“And who’s attitude doesn’t get better when they are high as a kite?”

I have worked with individuals with disabilities for more than 35 years and the prisons are full of dopers who got violent. Their attitude didn’t get better on drugs.

Maybe the first 3 years on medication provides a benefit to some people. Maybe not. Seeking treatment is a choice. I have never seen a public school system prescribe meds. Ever. You have to seek out a doctor to get them.
