My 11 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD last year in 5th grade. He has attended the highly gifted program in the public school and has recently begun the middle school program. In 5th grade we were not given a 504 as he was passing all of his subjects, now in middle school, he is failing everything (with the exception of PE).
With the upcoming 504 meeting on the horizon, I am hopeful that we will see some improvement (for his depression’s sake). BUT, should the 504 not appropriately address all of his needs, what are the alternatives? There is a private school here that is specifically for 2E children, but the tuition is prohibitive. I do know that other children from the public school are there with tuition assistance from the district and this would be an ideal in my opinion, as I do not foresee my son being academically successful in the very rigid program he currently attends.
My question is, does anyone have any idea as to how to go about having the district support alternative/private schools as an option for children that the district cannot sufficiently accommodate? What due process has to occur and what is a very generic timeline (if any).
With the high IQ, our options are limited as a general ed or special ed classes would be below his abilities.
