Improving Writing Skills?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is just finishing 2nd grade. He has a reading disability (and ADD) but his reading has greatly improved this year, thanks to all the advice from Pattim. His written book reports continue to be quite disorganized and fragmented. Yes, we are working with V/V to improve his cognitive skills. Recently, we started using Spivey’s “Strengthening Your Writing.” It’s too soon to say if it is helping.

Has anyone used the Spivey writing system? If not, are there programs you’ve used and liked? Has anyone used the new KidsInspiration (the computer mapping program) yet?

Any and all help is welcome!

Hi Pat, I have taught my students Inspiration for the past two years. It isn’t just a writing program for students, but for adults too. I wish I would have had it when I was in college. It is also a help for teachers as well because there are a lot of templates that will help in making graphic organizers. I recommend it highly. I also use a program called Step Up To Writing published by Sopris West. It is a very effective program for deficient writers. It is multisensory in nature and helps stucture paragraphs and essays for kids. I hope this helps.
