Hello everyone, my name is Courtney. When I was in third grade I was misdiagnosed with a learning disability. I do admit that I had issues reading but there was never one set issue. I thought I was dyslexic, because my dad and uncle are. But looking back there was never any proof that I was. Now at 24, I am writing my college thesis on this. I am wondering if there is anyone out there that also experienced this.

I don’t know if this will help but I work in a title one school. We are 98% Hispanic and 96% Spanish speaking. We have students who are misdiagnosed because of their language. There is a fine line between being at risk and having a disability. A lot of times language concerns are mistaken for learning diabetes.

Different states have different qualifications for specific learning disabled (SLD) placement. Do you know if you were given a full IQ assessment as well as academic testing and cognitive assessment testing? Even though the qualifications differ most states do these types of tests.In the state of FL in order to qualify for SLD you would have had to have an average IQ (80-100) and shown academic deficits as well as processing deficits when compared to your IQ. They may have found that you have difficulty with processing speed,short term memory, or long term retrieval and this would have shown up in academics like reading,writing, or math. Although in FL the SLD label includes Dyslexia (because only a doctor can diagnose this schools cannot) not all students who are SLD are Dyslexic. Good luck on your research!
