Hi Everyone! I have been enjoying this website for several years now. I thought I would share with those of you who live in the New Jersey area (and everyone else) a really great project I do with my Resource Center kids that is going to appear on “Classroom Close-up NJ” on NJN Public television starting next week (Feb. 26) for a couple of weeks. My elementary students (7-10 years old) write, film, star, and partially edit their own news program called Nutty News that we air on local educational access channel after the school sees it. The kids each have their own segments in the show and do a really terrific job. They write stories to include other kids around the school ( and other staff, too). Their reading skills, writing skills, communication skills, and confidence levels have noticably increased. They really enjoy doing the work behind the show and seem to have a better understanding of how TV is put together (which has it’s own benefits). I hope if you live in the area that NJN reaches, you will watch these really neat kids who are becoming role models for other children with learning differences! The show is just touching the tip of the iceberg of the creativity these children have! If you want to know more.. email me at school at [email protected] and I’ll share with you this unique project! Anyone can do it! cat
here's how I do Nutty News- breifly!
Hi! Thanks for responding!!! I would LOVE to share!! First, do you have access to a video camera? The editing may be able to be done by your highschool video class or a local vo-tech class looking for practice with video editing (there is a school nearby my school that offered to edit for us, but I have the equipment so I do it myself..plus I love to edit!) What I generally do, is brainstorm and (as a group)assign a segment to each of the kids (or pair them up if needed) and then they are responsible for writing the material. I will assist where necessary (especially spelling!) The segments that we run on top of our particular writing assignments (like rainforest animals) are “Mike’s Movies and More”, “Paul’s People”, “Marie’s Special Report”, “Robert’s Challenge”, “Cooking With Kayla and Phyllicia”, “Cool Facts” (in which we report on famous people with LD to help educate otheres and my own students),”Joke Time”, and bloopers. In this way, I can get them to write for a variety of purposes. For instance, we are doing a “how to” paper in class that we will then video tape them performing the task they are describing (that will air in addition to the above mentioned segments). The kids are 7-10 that are in my room, and already they are showing great progress in their desire to write more complex sentences - and sense of humor!! One wants to do a “How to be a Couch Potato”! and another “How to be Annoying”! They are so creative!! I will grade according to what I expect out of each of the kids. Some, it may just be writing a complete sentence without assistance, another is writing a paragraph that has order to it. Do you know what I mean? We film the segments (and 2 kids as anchors) to pull it all together - and you MUST include the bloopers! They love that part best!! It helps the other kids watching to see how much work went on behind the scenes to make everything look so smooth. If you need more specifics, I will tell you anything else to help you get it off the ground!!!!!!: I would love more information about your program. I teach high school
: ED/BD students and have been looking for something like this for
: them. Let me know more. Thanks Cynthia
