Cumulative Folder

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Could someone tell me what should be in the cumulative file at school.
This supposivedly is the file that teachers refer to, but when I looked
at my daughter’s all that was there were report cards and standardized
test scores for classwide tests (CTBS, TCS) - her 504 was not there.
Shouldn’t the cumulative file have a student’s 504 and/or current IEP?

I realize that IEP assessments, meeting notes, etc. should only be in
the confidential file, but what should be avail. for the gen-ed teachers
to refer to?

Different school districts interpret this in different ways. Some keep all records pertaining to SPED and 504 issues at the DPED Corrdinators office- which does little to disseminate it to the right people. Some schools maintain a separate file system in the building with a sign out list and some file it altogether in a supervised place.

While I understand the reason for being more particular about SPED records, the logic of it escapes me. All student records are confidential. Some are not “more confidential” than others. So… my preference (as someone who does frequent record reviews and former teacher) is to have them in one place- in the school. That way- you know they are available to teachers- and the bottom line is that teachers- not just SPED folks- need to be able to see them.

I keep the files locked in my classroom, and I let teachers know what accomodations that are needed to make my students successful at the beginning of each semester.
