We are currently attempting to reorganize our Middle School Special Ed dept.
We offer the continuum of services (with the exception of TC) and have a 45 minute class period which we call “Guided Studies” built into the regular schedule. This class is designed to provide support for those students who are in general ed classes most of the day, some with a co-teacher. We are looking for a concise course description of this period, to be included in our curriculum handbook. To avoid reinventing the wheel: Could someone out there send along what you use for this course description? Thanks in Advance! Michigan

We just want a course description…when the kids come in for this class period..they bring work from other classes that they may need help with…or they might study for a quiz..or just complete homework from general ed classes…we check to see if they have their planners and all things completed…or need additionsal help with organization etc…
Learning Strategies is what this class is called
This is just the class that I DON’T want my middle school daughter in. We opted out of it. I used to work at the middle school and the class you want a description for was called “Learning Strategies”…. it was a zoo…looks good on paper but it just didn’t live up to what was promised because the needs as you are describing are too vast and varied, they can’t be all met. We had aides in the class room and one RSP teacher and we had kids all needing something different, We felt we were putting bandaids on the kids and not truly remediating or assisting them with their studies…
What about Anita Archer’s series Skills for School Success by Curriculum Associates? I am not sure if your game plan is to reteach curriculum by having a learning strategies study hall or do study skills. But at the lab class where my daughter went to school they did a portion of their day in this program and the kids learned better ways to study and take tests.
