WADE (Wilson Assessment of Decoding and Encoding)

I am interested in assessment for Wilson, specifically their WADE tool. I would like to hear reactions from other teachers who have used it. Some questions are: How do you use it? Do you find it more comprehensive then other assessments such as the Woodcock? How often do you use it?

It is an easy and cheap assessment, it is not as comprehensive as the woodcock johnson by a long shot. It checks their knowledge of the sound/symbol relationship, their decoding real words and nonsense words, their sight word vocabulary and spelling. I have it and have used it, I usually just screen with I have new kids start with me and the parents don’t want to pay for an assessment.

There is an A version and a B version so I suppose you could do a pre-test and post test comparision that way. I haven’t used it in a long time since I am immersed in speech and language testing and would rather use normed tests. I use it to screen kids in my tutoring practice because it doesn’t provide normed data and it gives me a good idea where they are in regards to skills and orthographic knowledge

Thanks for that information. Do you use the Wilson program in your tutoring? (individual student or group?) I would really be interested in your opinion of the program from someone who has used it.

I don’t use it like it is suggested. I pretty much start where the person is stuck in regards to phonemic awareness, orthographic expectancies, and sound symbol relationship knowledge. I move much faster than the Wilson program suggests. I do one on one therapy and some group therapy. Iam trained in LMB programs, PACE and OG. I am becoming a SLP. I rarely follow a cookbook plan, I create a program for a child that will teach him what he needs to know to read and succeed in the fastest way possible. The way that I use it doesn’t mean that Wilson wouldn’t work for you. I have seen it used effectively in high school but my feeling is that Wilson should be done with small group instruction to really move people who are having problems through the program quickly.
