Spaulding, does anyone know anything about it?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I had a teacher in the doctor’s office where I work the other day, tell me about a reading program, called Spaulding, has anyone ever heard of it? She is confident it would help my son, but I’ve had other teachers think they have the cure too, and so far no one has.

Spalding is described here on this site under LD Indepth in an article about multisensory reading programs (Orton-Gillingham based). The book is called The Writing Road to Reading. I haven’t used it but sent for their information. I also found out that another group, the Riggs Institute, has adapted the Spalding method to include easy to follow lesson plans. Spalding is one of the recommended programs for children with dyslexia. I also know of a homeschooling mother who uses it for her regular reading and writing instruction. Actually, the program can be used in the regular classroom.

my daughter is 3 months into it.There is a set of cards with phonemes on it . The card shows you how to pronounce the sound of the phoneme. The sounds for (a) are (a) as in at ,(a) as in navy and (a) as in want. It also helps with spelling as the (a) in navy is underlined so child knows it is second sound and the (a) in want has the number 3 over it so child knows it is the third sound. It also gives you spelling rules such as (a) usually says the second (a) sound at the end of a syllable and that (a) says the third (a) sound at the end of a word.It seems the best I have seen or heard of and since my daughter’s visual memory is best with the underlining and numbering of the sounds seems to help her remember easier. I like the program cause it not only works on the reading but also writing and spelling. Her tutor also uses the explode the code series with her also as she needs help differentiating the middle sounds in words and the second letter in blends. This is not an instant miracle for her but she does need more phonics work than the school was giving her and I see this program giving her a strong base.Read the book “The Writing Road To Reading” by Spaulding.

This is a respected program and might help. There are a lot of other good programs out there too. Email me, or post here, and tell us a little more about your child and the problems you’ve had and what’s been tried and failed, and you will be swamped with advice about good programs.
