Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can some one explian this program it was reccommended that my son use this method. I thought this program just helped children with decoding and phonenemic problems. My son has trouble with reading comprhension. Will this program help with reading compreh and how? What do they do different in this program that will help him with reading compreh?

Which program is it? Some O-G programs are more comprehensive and do address comprehension (the one I use does). Also, for the majority of my students (though not all of them), when their accuracy and fluency improved, their comprehension also went up because their minds were freed to think about that stuff.

On the other hand, I have heard people just recommend O-G because that’s what was there… Can you ask the recommender why it was recommended?

I’ve got a bunch of the kinds of things I use for developing reading comprehension on my site (www.resourceroom.net) — but of course I have no idea how that compares to what would be done in your situation.

Lisa,

In addition to what Sue said, it is very possible that a child could have comprehension problems because of difficulty with or slow decoding. Does your son’s testing show that he is on level with decoding (word attack), phonemic awareness, etc., but only shows a delay in comprehension?
