Reading for gifted /adhd

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a daughter who is gifted in decodeing. Decodes on a 6 grade
level. Spelling and reading for decoding is way above avg.
Her comprendtion of single word is 5th grade. But when she reads
she becomes confused with conversations. (Who is saying that?)
and does not get inferences at all. Also there is a problem with
abstact meanings. Fact books are no problem but fiction is a mess.

She is in the middle of testing for Adhd and Asperger. So far they are
leaning to Adhd.
She has tested lower (avg) in tracking, auditory attention (avg)
On the CPT she showed poor perceptual sensitivity.
She also show a deficit in shifting working memory.

Now with this information I would like to know …. Is a Vand V reading
program what she needs to help in these area’s?
I have been told this and I would like to confirm before I order this
as it is expensive. Can a mom with just a high school education
follow this program? Also is anyone ever used Idea Chain’s
Mind Prime? I found it on the net. Thanks

Your daughter fits Lindamood’s Bell description for the type of kid V & V is designed for. I understand Idea Chain’s Mind Prime is more scripted.

Yes she fits the discription for the Comprehension and Thinking
But you are saying Mind Prime is easier for me to follow to help her?
And do you know if the results are as good? I have heard great things,
about LB V/V. I am afriad of lack of education.(HS mine) I may have
problems. Also Mind Prime is more expensive. So I wonder is it worth,
the extra cost? thanks

There was a discussion relatively recently comparing these two programs and discussing whether training was necessary. I would use the search function on this board to search for it.

I’ve used both programs. My son needed much smaller step sizes (in terms of learning visualization) than I got from the V & V book. The Mind Prime gave me those smaller steps. In addition Jane, the creator of the program, is available for consultation. She often created intermediate techniques for me by phone. My son has not finished the program but will this summer. (We are in the middle of Interactive Metronome right now). I have seen improvement in his spelling and telling of story/movie plots with the visualization work we’ve done. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions

Patricia,
thank you for your reply…It is you opinion that the Mindprime
comes with more instruction, also at home help? That is what
I am looking for. I like the payment plan also. The Lindamood-Bell
looks like you need more training to work with this progam. Also
from what I have read on the site, it shys away from a home study
type situation ( at least without training). Did you try the CD rom
for LB V/V? I was thinking of ordering this for my dd to do by her
self for practice.

I didn’t try the CD. If you try it, let me know what you think. And, yes, MindPrime is developed for home use with the parent as the teacher. Although I am a psychologist—and teach at the graduate student level—I find teaching my 3rd grader to be challenging. I needed lots of guidance to see me through the first half of the V/V program and had no where to turn. MindPrime worked for me although my son needs to finish the program. He uses visualization some of the time but doesn’t bother with it the other times, even though he needs it. There simply are no quick fixes. Unfortunately.
