Huge sigh of relief!

Many of you know that in an effort to help our gift/ld son we took some drastic measures. Having helped him maintain through middle school we knew we had exhausted ourselves and our public school district and high school loomed menacingly in his future. So, I quit my teaching job, sold our house and moved a hundred miles away for him to attend a private, college-prep high school for ld children. We rented an apartment a few blocks from school so he could walk to and from. I got a new teaching job. My husband still comutes a few days a week. For us, all of this was hard and lonely, but we were determined. Now, the sigh!!! We made it through the first year. He was on the honor roll all year. Tuesday night he received two awards at the school awards assembly. He worked hard and learned interesting things. Although he tells us it was hard, we saw a calm and ease in him that we rarely saw before. For his recent 15th birthday, I bought him a Star Wars book that was about 150 pages and maybe 4th or 5th grade reading level. He announced that he was going to read it HIMSELF and nightly he read a few pages on his own until he was done. The first real book he has ever read alone! I’m resisting the temptation to have the book bronzed. One down and three to go, but the future looks bright for the first time in ages. We are fortunate to be able to make this move. I wanted to share the good news with all of you who have been supportive and all of you who walk this same path, trying to care for a dear child.
