certificate of completion vs reg.diploma

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Actually not a vs question, I was wondering if a student who receives certificate of completion instead of a reg. diploma, could then take the GED or something and get the reg. diploma that way? Would it make a difference? I don’t think it will come up for my son but I wondered anyway. Thanks y’all.

Your son can take the GED if he receives an IEP diploma or a certificate of completion. In fact, he would have to in order to get into a community college or a regular 4 year college.

If he gets a certificate of completion, he’ll either have to get a GED or go on welfare. You can’t even get a job with a certificate of completion, let alone get any further training in any kind of school.

My school district also offers the Occupational Diploma as an alternative for special ed students. This diploma is tied to vocational programs and involves a coop work experience. The students earn credits and create a portfolio of work experience. It is a good alternative for many students.
